Mastering

by Steve Nelson last modified 10-05-2007

We have been asked a few times about mastering, so it's about time we laid our cards on the table.

Mastering

Euphonic Masters!

So you have finished your project and your shiny new mixes are done and everyone is happy... well about as happy as they can be after the proverbial band infighting that follows a long session has calmed down!

What next?

Usually the band ask the stock question, "Can you master it for us mate?"

In a word, No.

No! Why not! Joe Bloggs studio down the road does it for £40 per hour..

Well, here is the situation.

We believe that mastering is a specialist role, a skill that takes years of experience, usually coming from working across a range of musical genres, in different enviroments with different kit etc etc.

So we use an outside engineer for all our mastering, someone with all the skills, kit and accolades to prove it. Euphonic masters of Memphis Tenessee are our choice of mastering house and thier engineer Brad Blackwood is an exceptionally talented guy. Brad, who has been nominated for Grammy Awards and Dove awards for his work has mastered a fair old range of stuff for us always delivers us great masters and has never let us down yet!

Yeah but it's a fortune right ?

Nope, it's £600 + VAT for an album or £70 +VAT per track

One footnote to all of this, some engineers will "master" your recordings straight after your session, often using a piece of automated hardware/FX box to do the job. In plain english this is tant amount to buying a new car, and after collecting it in all it's gleaming glory from the showroom the sales guy then proceeds to take it to the nearest auto car wash and expecting it to come out of the other side looking better again!

If you want to hear A/B comparisons of professionally mastered work then drop us a line on the contact form and we can send you an audio CD with a mixed and mastered version of a track.
